Have you identified your weeds? Purslane is one to know and eat rather than smother with weed fabric. I wonder why you are not companion planting using garlic or onions near kale, cabbage, chard?
My most troublesome weeds are vetch and milkweed. And the extent of my companion planting depends largely upon my ability to sufficiently maintain the bed, timing of the crops going in, and availability of plants/seeds at the time of planting.
