Welcome, friends!
Almost 20 years ago, I started this publication to share my journey as a lady-farmer and aspiring wildlife conservationist. Along the way I bought a 53-acre farm in Western Maine, where I practice methods of regenerative agriculture with my 17 year-old son, working to improve the soil as a means of promoting the habitat for the benefit of the community we serve. A devout follower of Aldo Leopold, the father of our modern conservation movement, I believe that community includes the soil, water, fauna and flora, as well as the people.
Through this blog, I continue to share my farm-journey, as well as 25 years’ accumulated knowledge in agriculture and self-reliance. These written works share my love for wild things and wild spaces in hopes my experiences may help and inspire others who seek a life in greater connection to nature.
Hi! I’m Sam, your friendly neighborhood farmer.
To learn more about who I am and how I came to be a farmer with a passion for wildlife conservation, I invite you to check out this post: How I Bought a Farm With NO Money.
To learn more about the Runamuk Acres Conservation Farm, what we do, grow, and the methods of agricultural conservation that we emply, please check out the farm website.
This publication is free, but we really need your help to keep it going and to support conservation efforts at Runamuk. Please consider subscribing as a free or paid member. Even a simple share, restack or recommendation supports my work. I thank you for your kindly consideration.
A Literary CSA
What I’m proposing is a sort of “literary CSA”. Where members subscribe to to support efforts at the Runamuk Acres Conservation Farm. In exchange, those members receive a share of the “harvest” in the form of intriguing online content and in the community we will grow together.
The CSA model has gained in popularity over the last 10-20 years, but if you’re not a frequenter of your local farmers’ market, you might not be familiar with the term.
“Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is a relationship between community members and the farm. Members commit to a whole season, allowing the farmer to offset early season costs such as seeds, amendments, etc. In exchange members receive an abundance and variety of nutritious vegetables over the course of the growing season, along with certain member-perks.”
What to Expect
Subscribers to Runamuk Acres can expect:
Farm-Updates: Follow my agrarian life through bi-weekly Farm Updates.
Field-Notes: Alternating bi-weekly with the farm-updates, Field Notes is a new segment of the Runamuk-blog focused on the seasonal observations of this Western Maine farm and ecologic reserve. Offering tips for those seeking increased nature-connectedness in their lives.
Love-Notes: I’ll often share a Note to Substack for readers. This might be 1 or 2 big wins from the day, a photo or thought I want to share. Free to all.
Bonus Content: Bonus posts rotating the following topics: agriculture, nature, and conservation.
Community building: cultivating a community of like-minded people to create a support system for us all.

This is where I invite new members to introduce themselves in the comments. Tell me a little bit about yourself. What brought you here and what you hope to get out of Sparkling Audacity? If you have any questions or observations, I’d love to hear them. Most of all, I thank you for being here with me.
This is amazing!
